Ingredients for Sesame Chicken Recipe
- Chicken fillet – chicken fillet is the most protein-rich and lowest-calorie option, but you can also use chicken thighs for a very tasty outcome.
- Sriracha sauce – any variety of Sriracha sauce you prefer. My favorites are traditional, garlic-flavored and especially “smokey” Sriracha sauce, which gives the dish also a slightly smoky flavor.
- Honey – any type of honey will work, but if possible always try to use a high quality unfiltered raw honey bought from your local farmers market.
- Soy sauce – any brand of soy sauce of your choice will work.
- Garlic powder – I recommend using garlic powder, which mixes easily with the sauce and gives it a smooth and pleasant garlic flavor. You can also replace the garlic powder with minced garlic or garlic paste, but in this case, you should keep in mind that the sauce will be much spicier and have a much stronger garlic flavor.
- Corn or potato starch – both corn and potato starch work great here. We use starch for breading so that the chicken retains its juiciness better when frying, remains a little crispier on the outside, and the sauce sticks better.
- Olive oil – we use olive oil for frying the chicken.
- Salt and pepper – to season the chicken.
- Sesame seeds – adds a nice crunch to the recipe and is perfect for a garnish.
- Green onions – is great to use as a garnish and makes the whole dish feel fresher.
How to Make The Best Sesame Chicken?
- Cut and prepare the chicken fillet – Cut the chicken fillet into smaller pieces or strips. Place the chicken fillet in a bowl, season with salt and pepper and pour the starch over it. Mix everything together so that the chicken pieces are evenly coated with a thin layer of starch.
- Mix together the honey sauce – Add the honey, sriracha sauce, soy sauce and garlic powder to a small mixing bowl and mix until smooth.
- Fry the chicken in a pan and add the sauce – add olive oil to the pan and heat the pan over medium/high heat. Place the chicken pieces in the pan so that they have a bit of space between them. Let the chicken fry for ~2-3 minutes on one side and then turn it over and let it fry for another 2-3 minutes, until the chicken has turned slightly brown on both sides.
- Add the sauce to the pan – Reduce the heat to medium and pour in all the previously mixed sauce and mix evenly with the chicken. Let the sauce thicken for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has nicely stuck to the chicken.
- Serve the honey chicken – Serve the honey chicken with your favorite side dish and sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish.
